Creative Rut
I am sitting in front of a very nice Apple Macbook Pro, Directly above me in our spare room is a equally nice PC. Both computers are loaded with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver. The Mac also has an awesome little suite called iLife that let's me do everything from record the live music I am playing(Badly) on the Harmonica to creating a DVD quality home movie. Next to the Mac is a Digital SLR Camera with a variety of Lenses and next to that an iPod with dozens of podcasts about media and technology and innovation.
My last major creative work was taking pictures of our new kitten Sophie(she says hi) and resizing them to send to the Inlaws, it took me less than 4 minutes of computer time. The point of saying all this is not to earn more geek cred, Weird Al's Based his new song on me ;)(Yes I do own the Starwars Holiday Special). The point is to say I have also these fantastic tools to create and innovate and I've just been sitting here digging stories about other people being creative.
Also this isn't a woe is me post. I know what I need to do. I need to get off my lazy butt and get out into the world and see something creative. I need to hit a few galleries or museums. I need to be challenged by myself, to get out and create. I've decided to take the advice of an artist I know and put the tools away for a while. I'm going to create on the canvas in my head, tug at the gray matter a bit. It's only through stretching our minds to the possibilities that creativity comes.

Creative ruts are the worst, but here's the good news, you're still seeking to be creative. Most people just live in the rut. I agree with putting away the tools for a little while. My other favorite device is just be blindly creative. Just get out the old sketchbook (my tool of choice) and put down literally anything that pops into my head. It usually doesn't take long for something to develop and in the mean time you usually end up crating something that will end up being useful later on. I go through my sketch books from time to time and usually find something that sparks me. We should hit a museum some time. God bless,
Dave Weisas
